Hey Friends, welcome to our blog. While lots of you live in the neighborhood, we noticed that we get lots of visitors who travel from out of state or from outside the perimeter. We’re flattered that you come such a long way to see us and try our delicious mead. However, Atlanta is such a culturally rich city that has so much to offer. We’d like to elevate your Monks Mead experience with nearby attractions. Make a day trip out of your visit to Georgia’s 1st Meadery with these top things to do in Atlanta.
We’re located in the Poncey-Highland neighborhood and surrounded by the locals’ favorite neighborhoods like Little 5 Points, Inman Park, Candler Park, and Virginia Highlands. Being located on the Freedom Park Trail puts us within walking distance to each neighborhood, and the Atlanta Beltline, which will lead you to Ponce City Market, one way and Krog Street Market the other way. So come for our mead and stay to explore.
Things to do in Atlanta
The Van Gogh Immersive Experience
The Van Gogh Experience is coming back to Atlanta in March. The Immersive experience is reopening, bigger and better, at the historic Pullman Yards in Atlanta. The new spectacular venue will feature a redesigned experience that is more colorful and more immersive than before. Very conveniently for you, this venue is only a 6-minute drive from our tasting room. Tickets start around $36 for adults.
Virginia Highlands
Located north of our tap room, down North Highland Ave, is a thriving shopping and restaurant district. You’ll find coffee shops, plant stores, dessert, and lots of bars and restaurants here. We love The Green Flamingo for plants, Ocean Wave for sushi, Bar.bacoa for tapas, and Moe’s & Joe’s Tavern for late night hangouts.
Jimmy Carter Presidential Library
Located just a short walk down the Freedom Park Trail, you can visit the museum at The Carter Presidential Center. The museum is located next to a lake on 30 acres of beautiful parkland. Inside you can see a half-size replica of the oval office. Fun fact, the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library was built on land that was originally owned by the state of Georgia for the purpose of building an interstate highway. We’re really glad we have this beautiful serene space here instead of I85.
Freedom Parkway Trail
As mentioned earlier, this gem sits on a plot of land where a proposed highway was never constructed. This is why it’s shaped as an “X” and now connects several of Atlanta’s favorite neighborhoods together and to The Beltline. Use this map to navigate the 200+ acres of park space and landmarks.
Little 5 Points
Take the Freedom Park Trail east to one of Atlanta’s oldest and most eccentric neighborhoods, Little 5. Here you will find tattoo shops, unique thrift shops, record stores, coffee, pizza, hole in the wall bars, entertainment venues and restaurants. It’s easy to explore as a pedestrian friendly neighborhood. If you’re visiting around Halloween make sure you check out the Little 5 Points Halloween Festival and Parade. This annual event is an Atlanta staple and has been named one of the top 10 Halloween events in the country.
Inman Park
Located south of our tap room on North Highland Ave, Inman Park has a thriving restaurant scene, including bartaco, BeetleCat, Barcelona Wine Bar, Del Bar and FolkArt Restaurant for brunch. The neighborhood also hosts many events such as the Inman Park Festival and Inman Park Wine Stroll. Make sure you check their events page when you visit us to make sure you’re not missing out. Refer to the Freedom Park Trail map to navigate your way to Inman Park.
The Atlanta Beltline
Taking the Freedom Park Trail west, past the Jimmy Carter Presidential library, you’ll cross The Beltline. You can keep going, but we suggest you take a right onto The Beltline. A left turn works too. The Beltline is essentially a multi-use outdoor trail that circles Atlanta and connects neighborhoods. You’ll walk past breweries, restaurants, art installations, murals, parks, and tiny doors. You can navigate The Beltline and your stops with this map. Refer to the Freedom Park Trail map to navigate your way to The Beltline.
Ponce City Market
Take a right onto The Beltline from The Freedom Parkway Trail and you’ll walk past the Historic Fourth Ward SkatePark and the Historic Fourth Ward Park itself to Ponce City Market. PCM is a mixed-used development located in a former Sears, Roebuck and Co. facility that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The 2.1 million sq. foot space is split between residential units, restaurants, a food hall, retail, boutiques and offices. It’s a sure visit to explore, shop, get donuts, coffee, and visit the mini amusement park, or The Roof at Ponce City Market. Recent openings include the BarVegan restaurant and the Nike store which is more of an experimental lab space.
Krog Street Market
Named one of “The World’s Best Food Halls” in 2015 by Travel + Leisure, Krog Street Market occupies a 1920’s warehouse on Krog Street. DUH! The goal was to create a space as authentic as the building itself, so you’ll find market stalls with fresh produce, prepared food, and other goods. You will also find restaurants, retailers, a cocktail club, a bakeshop, and a small batch chocolatier. Take the Freedom Parkway Trail to a left onto The Atlanta Beltline, and a left onto Lake Ave NE by The Ice Box. The colorful building with the “Cool Stuff” mural and the king of Pops Cart is hard to miss. P.S. King of Pops is an Atlanta staple, so make sure you grab one. And If you get tired of walking just stop at Ladybird Grove & Mess Hall for a cocktail break.
Krog Street Tunnel
Known for its ever-changing street art, Krog Street Tunnel expresses the attitude of Atlanta through artwork. You won’t only find the inspiring work of Atlanta artists here but also an updated display of local street festivals, music, and events. Plus it’s a great photo opp for out of town folks. Once you cross you’ll end up at 97 Estoria, and if you take a left onto Wylie Street, you’ll walk along plenty more colorful murals. To get to Krog Street Tunnel at the intersection of Krog Street and Dekalb Ave, just walk past Krog Street Market.
