It’s mid-November and according to seasonal store sections we’ve fast-forwarded through Thanksgiving straight to Christmas. Plus, Google Trends confirms that google searches for “gifts” spike in November. So we will continue with our 2022 Local Holiday Gifts Series.
In March, we announced the Monks Meadery and Savannah Bee Company collaboration to bring you a hot mead. At the time, in our excitement, we described the nameless concept as “hot, spicy, tropical, and made with Hot Honey.” Today, you can find the mango, orange, and pineapple infusion beverage, Savannah Heat, on the shelves in our taproom and Savannah Bee Company mead bars located in Georgia.
While this tropical mead joins our 5 Summer Meads list, that doesn’t mean it can’t warm up your winter evening. The spice comes from the Hot Honey which is made with scotch bonnet and habanero peppers. Both of these are variants of the chili pepper and rate between 100,000 and 350,000 on the Scoville scale which measures pepper pungency in Scoville Heat Units (SHU). For comparison, a bell pepper has a zero SHU rating and a jalapeno is rated between 2,500 and 8,000 SHU.
Fun fact: a scotch bonnet pepper is named for its resemblance to a “tammie” or a Scottish bonnet traditionally worn by men.
